‘People don’t like to hear this but Donald Trump is a rhetorical genius’, says Dr Jennifer Mercieca an expert on US presidential rhetoric and political communication from Texas A&M University. Delving into Trump’s choice of rhetorical devices may offer some interesting clues into how the worst of Trump scandals have failed to make a dent on his popularity among his supporters. Rhetorical devices are techniques that are used to persuade and the Ancient Greeks were masters of them. They have intimidating Latin names such as ‘ad baculum’ and ‘paralipsis’ but are quite simple to decipher once you now the basics. When propaganda is everywhere, how do you determine what is real and what is not? No longer confined to advertisements, propaganda now appears amidst messages from our friends and family, as jokes, and in what appear to be news articles. UC Santa Cruz social psychologist Anthony Pratkanis advised that when you’re confronted with a persuasive message that changes your emotions, you need to ask yourself why. Jennifer Mercieca, Texas A&M historian of rhetoric, suggested we consider the wisdom of Roman statesman and philosopher Cicero who said “Cui bono?,” or “Who profits?” She adds that you should think about “who’s manipulating you and for what reason” when confronted with news that plays on your emotions. Pratkansis and Mercieca shared their thoughts at a Zócalo/UCLA Anderson School of Management event, “Is Propaganda Keeping Americans From Thinking for Themselves?,” which took place at National Center for the Preservation for Democracy in downtown Los Angeles.

Dr. Mercieca explains why its important as Americans to be citizens and not partisans. Join her as she argues how a William H. Marcy aphorism defines American politics today. Dr. Jennifer Mercieca (Ph.D., University of Illinois) is an historian of American political discourse, especially discourses about citizenship, democracy and the presidency. Her scholarship combines American history with rhetorical and political theory in an effort to understand democratic practices. Her citizenship research argues that current views of citizenship treat Americans mainly as partisans, which prevents them from acting for the common good. Her presidency research argues that we have heroic expectations for the presidency that are both unrealistic and unconstitutional and that these expectations burden the presidency. She is the author of Founding Fictions and co-editor of The Rhetoric of Heroic Expectations: Establishing the Obama Presidency. Her essays have appeared in scholarly journals like Rhetoric & Public Affairs, The Quarterly Journal of Speech, and Presidential Studies Quarterly.
